Hall of the Mountain King, Peer Gynt Suite - Grieg
They waited until Peer was sound asleep. Then, very slowly, they crept out and formed a circle around him.
They lifted him by his legs and arms, carefully so not to wake him, and carried him deep into their cave
to the Hall of the Mountain King.

Trolls are creeping from the cave, Some are scared, some are brave. Peer Gynt sleeps, he doesn’t know They’ll take him to their king. Trolls are creeping from the cave Faster now, circle round. Pick him up and take him To the cave far underground. Careful now, please let him sleep. Take his arms, take his feet. He will have a big surprise When he wakes up! |
Peer awoke as the trolls put him down.
There, sitting on a throne, was the King
of the Trolls. He looked ugly and mean! Beside him sat the Troll Princess.
The Troll King scowled at Peer and said,
"Who are you that you dare to come into my forest?"
Peer was frightened. He thought, "I will tell him that I'm a prince. Then he will think I'm an important person and he will let me go."
Acting very brave Peer said, "I am Prince Peer Gynt, son of the King of Norway."
The King of the Trolls believed Peer. He said, "I was going to let you go, but since you are a prince,
you will make a fitting husband for my daughter!"

Trolls: "Oh great King, we have a prize! We surmise, he’s not wise; We have found that he tells lies! What do you advise?"
King: "He shall have my daughter fair, Giant ears, cactus hair. She has lovely pointed teeth; Her face would scare a bear!"
Peer: "I'm no prince, she won't want me! I'm Peer Gynt! Can't you see? She's too lovely For my eyes, I'm getting out of here!" |
The trolls no longer believed Peer. They thought he really was a prince; they wanted him for the Troll Princess.
Peer started running and the angry trolls chased after him. Peer ran faster and faster. He stumbled in the dark.
Just as he thought he was free, the trolls grabbed him and held him down.
They bound his legs and arms and took him back to the Troll King.
"So, you thought you could get away, did you? Nobody leaves our cave unless we let him go." said the King.
" You will marry my daughter! We shall prepare for the wedding tonight.
We will have the wedding in the morning before dawn!"
All the trolls shouted, “We 'll have the wedding in the morning before dawn.!”
Before Peer knew what had happened to him, he was married to the Troll Princess.
It took three years for Peer to find a way to sneak away from the trolls.
